As Memorial Day Weekend approaches, it brings with it the family gatherings, backyard barbeques, and sunny beachside afternoons. While we are making our plans for the long weekend, it’s important to take a moment to reflect on the meaning of the holiday, and take time to pay tribute to the brave individuals who served our nation and made the ultimate sacrifice. Here are some great local events designed to honor and give gratitude to those lost:
Memorial Day Flag Laying Event: Chesapeake Memorial Gardens, MAY 26TH @ 9:00 AM

- Join the American Legion as they honor our veterans at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens by placing flags on their graves.
Annual Memorial Day Parade: High Street Corridor, MAY 27TH @ 10:00 AM
206 High Street, Portsmouth, VA 23704
- What is known to be one of the longest running Memorial Day parades in the country, the City of Portsmouth’s Memorial Day Parade began in 1884. Since that time, Portsmouth has recognized and honored the sacrifices of the brave men and women in the United States Armed Forces each year during the parade. Enjoy floats, marching bands, military units, and lots of excitement. The parade begins at 10 a.m. and travels on High Street from Peninsula Avenue (at I.C. Norcom High School) to Crawford Street.

- Grab a pack and join the Coastal Virginia Ruck Club on a ruck to commemorate those who lost their lives in the line of duty.
Run to Remember: Military Aviation Museum, MAY 27TH @ 8:00 AM

- Lace up your running shoes and join Run to Remember’s 5K Run/Walk and Kid’s 1 Mile Fun Run to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation, all the while giving back to organizations dedicated to supporting families of fallen service members.
